Unique People From Around the World

Tomoji Tanabe celebrated his 113th birthday four days ago, living as the world’s oldest man.  He was born on September 18, 1895 and wishes to live five more years.  Currently living in his hometown Miyakonojo on Japan’s southern island Kyushu, he received gifts, flowers, and $1000 from the mayor.

A former city land surveyor, he lives with his son and daughter-in-law.  Praciticing the daily healthy habits that have brought him this far, Tanabe wakes up early to read the newspaper, drinks milk each afternoon, and eats regular meals.  He also avoids alcohol and does not smoke.

“Japan has one of the world’s longest life expectancies, nearly 86 years for women and 79 years for men, which is often attributed to the country’s healthy diet rich in fish and rice.

The world’s oldest person is 115-year-old Edna Parker, who was born on April 20, 1893, and lives in a nursing home in Indiana.”

Quite an amazing accomplishment.  You cannot deny that he appears to be in fantastic shape for a man who has lived over 100 years.  Getting to 70 years of age is challenging enough these days, especially for us Americans.  Imagine how many historical moments and technological advances he has lived through.  In 1895, the world was just poking at the idea of the automobile; now in 2008 companies are trying to make cars less reliable on gas.  Just crazy.

The longevity of his life is highly correnational to the “…healthy diet rich in fish and rice” embraced in Japan.  Let’s compare that to two words that pretty much define the lifestyle of America: fast food.  Oh America.  On a random note, did you know that the car manufactures design wider seats for America?

What you are looking at is the world’s “leggiest woman” and the world’s shortest man.  Russian woman Svetlana Pankratova lives in Spain and is about 6-foot-4.  Her legs yet alone are more than four feet long!  Her upper body has normal proportions, but her unusually long legs give her a giraffe-like appearance. He Pingping of China stands at 2 feet 5.37 inches tall at 20 years old.

The pair met to publicise the release of “Guinness World Records 2009.” This year’s version of the popular book is due out Wednesday.”

He called Svetlana Pankratova’s legs ‘very beautiful.’”  Who said you had to be a certain height to have some game?

Here we have an earlier appearance from Mr. He Pingping, except this time he’s next Bao Xishun, the world’s tallest man.  Xinshun towers at an astonishing 7.9 feet.  “He claims he was of normal height until he was 16 when he experienced a growth spurt and reached his present height seven years later.”

Xinshun is married to a woman who is 5-foot-6.

Lastly we have a couple of idiots. Picture is self-explanatory.

Hurricane Ike: Person In Bear Suit

Another one of America’s unusual individuals caught on camera. Maybe he’s a relative of the guy who took a bath in a McDonald’s sink?

Burger King Employee Bathes In Sink

Eat at Burger King lately?  You might want to reevaluate your trust in the workers behind the counter.

A four minute video was posted on MySpace of a Burger King employee bathing naked in the restaurant’s sink.  This took place in Greene County in Xenia, Ohio in which the employee called himself “Mr. Unstable.”  It suits him if you ask me.  The video made its way around the internet on Monday, reaching Greene County Health Commissioner Mark McDonnell McDonalds.  He immediately sent health officials to investigate the situation, which violated numerous health code violations.  All involved employees were fired.

Burger King spokesperson Denise Wilson emailed the following statement to 2News Monday afternoon:

“Burger King Corp. was just notified of this incident and is cooperating fully with the health department. We have sanitized the sink and have disposed of all other kitchen tools and utensils that were used during the incident.

We have also taken appropriate corrective action on the employees that were involved in this video. Additionally, the remaining staff at this restaurant is being retrained in health and sanitation procedures.”

How creepy.  Who the hell takes a bubble bath at a fast food restaurant?  What’s the problem going home to do the exuberance of bathing?  I personally think bathing is dirty enough (unless you have the time, luxury, and an actual bath tub to do so), but to lay in the path of oils, saturated fats, and unhappiness?  OK, now that’s just psychologically weird.

The people who went to that Burger King that day must have felt queazy after hearing word of Mr. Unstable’s escapades.  They should have just went to the McDonald’s across the street.  Better yet, they should have just gone home and ate a salad because everyone knows America is a fat nation (though Mr. Unstable looks pretty skinny).

Just for fun…

8/8/08

In addition to the opening ceremony of the 2008 Olympics two days ago, two new lives were brought into the world.  Hailey Jo Hauer and Xander Jace Riniker were born on 8/8/08 at 8:08 AM, both weighing 8 pounds 8 ounces.  It’s amazing enough that one baby is born at that day, time, and weight… but two babies?  Now that’s a crazy coincidence.  If I was the parent of either child, I’d only let them start celebrating their birthday after the clock hits 8:08 AM, just for fun.  What if these babies are destined to be soulm8s?  Ha-ha-ha.

Speaking of the Olympics, that opening ceremony was spectacular.  My favorite moments were the group 2,008 people performing Tai Chi and the man “running” around the top of the stadium to complete the lighting of the Olympic torch.  Team USA was looking fresh.  The Germans pre-gamed.  And George Bush is something else.  I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

In case you were wondering about that last picture, here’s the official caption:

U.S. President George W. Bush playfully pats the back of U.S. Women’s Beach Volleyball team player Misty May-Treanor (L) at her invitation while visiting the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Grounds at the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, August 9, 2008. Team mate Kerri Walsh (R) watches.

Yahoo! had to make a clarification to editors so that there were no misunderstandings.  President Bush represents America well.  Anyways, I’m glad the Olympics  and football are finally here.  I was getting tired of seeing baseball highlights on TV.  The main coverage I’ll be keeping track of is USA basketball, but occasionally I run by events that I didn’t know were olympic sports e.g. badminton.  Synchronized swimming is interesting, too.  I can’t wait for table tennis, though.  Let the games begin.

What was your favorite part of the opening ceremony? Which events are you covering? If you catch anything interesting, let me know here.  (P.S. Those who comment may be rewarded.)

Talula Does The Hula

Nope, it’s not the name of the latest dance craze. Upcoming movie? Good guess. Oh, it’s one of those new fad diets. Not even close.

Talula Does The Hula is the name of a 9 year old girl from New Zealand.

Yes, it is the name of a human being.  According to the Associated Press, Judge Rob Murfitt was fed up with parents giving children unusual names.  With the girl involved in a custody battle, he had her name changed, but due to privacy issues her new name was not revealed.

In his ruling, Murfitt cited a list of the unfortunate names.

Registration officials blocked some names, including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit, he said. But others were allowed, including Number 16 Bus Shelter “and tragically, Violence,” he said.

C’mon parents… Keenan Got Lucy and Sex Fruit..  Number 16 Bus Shelter.. Talula Does The Hula?  The first question that comes to mind, “What were they thinking?”  The parents of these children either 1) Do not function properly and lack the intellectual capabilities to understand the ridicule behind these names or 2) Skipped over “John” and “Mary” on the names book.  Talula might have been fine, but did they really have to add “Does The Hula?”  It sounds like a great name for a Nickelodeon show though.

Parents, for the sake of the future of our children, please stick to “normal” (acceptable if you will) names.  If you want their name to be unique, go ahead.  But understand there is a thick line between unique and f&%$ing weird.  I don’t want my kids coming home one day telling me they made a new friend named Number 14 Bus Shelter.  I’m shallow, forgive me.

Setting Records: The Dark Knight

According to the Associated Press, The Dark Knight set a one-day box office record with $66.4 million on opening day, surpassing last year’s $59.8 million of Spiderman 3.  “The Dark Knight began with a record $18.5 million from midnight screenings, topping the previous high of $16.9 million for ‘Star Wars: Episode III — The Revenge of the Sith.’”  Impressive.

I never saw Batman Begins (Batman was not one of my cherished childhood super heroes), but with all the rave about this film, I really want to see it.  My question is, “How does it compare to Marvel’s Iron Man?”  I watched Iron Man three times this summer and it obviously entertained me.  Does The Dark Knight top Iron Man?

To stir up some controversy (dun dun dun), who do you believe is the better super hero?  Marvel vs. DC.  Batman or Iron Man?  Cast your vote and let the clashing begin.
